It’s been a challenging few years for the world. The pandemic continues to take a toll on our lives but we feel the time has come for bookmobiles to take the stage again. There are a variety of ways by which you could offer free books to your community, and even the standard vehicle format is viable with some common sense precautions, such as masking and distancing.

And so we have a great resource for you! Click here to view or download our comprehensive Free Bookmobile Start-Up & Operations guide. Containing much of what we learned during our years of operation throughout Sonoma County, the guide describes, step-by-step, how to launch, grow and maintain a free bookmobile. It also reveals our personal journey in the chapter supplements — “HOW WE DID IT”.

Even if such an endeavor doesn’t seem like your thing, have a peek. Hopefully you’ll find our story engaging, and you may be surprised at how easy and fun starting a new project can be. If you’re still not convinced, think about who might be excited to give it a try. Pass it along to them!

Here is the list of chapters:

1. Why Start a Free Bookmobile?
2. Surveying the Need in Your Area
3. Announcing Your Intentions and Enlisting Help
4. Your Outreach Vehicle and Related Equipment
5. Acquiring Books
6. Sorting and Storing Books
7. Displaying Books
8. Planning and Promoting Routes
9. Fundraising

Please feel free to be in touch with any questions or comments. We’d love to hear about any efforts you mount in your area. Our contact information is at the end of the guide and on our website.

Best wishes and happy giving!
